1. I know you, but some people may not. So could you please introduce yourself to the world? "My name is Marie Clements and I am a filmmaker and theatremaker based out of Vancouver and Galiano Island, BC." 2. What was your first job in the entertainment industry? Also, what did you do before that? "I started out as an actor in theatre and then went into broadcast journalism and worked at a lot of jobs before I went back to theatre as an actor, then writer, producer and director forming my own theatre company, then transitioning into film as a writer, director and producer forming my own film company MCM." 3. Did you study film before getting into the industry? "I didn’t study theatre or film in a conventional way. It would be great to say I was entirely self made but there are so many senior artists and mentors that I worked with that upped my game. I took advantage of as many industry learning initiatives I could and I tend to be obsessive when I am figuring out the how of a story getting made from the bones of it as a writer, to executing it as a director and producer over the long haul." 4. If you could work with anyone you would want, who would that person be and why? "I’m never great at these kind of questions. I feel I’ve worked with some very extraordinary artists in my lifetime and I continue to seek opportunities to be in the same room with them to continue our artistic collaboration over new projects and challenges. There are so many artists I have admiration for but you don’t really know who people are, the how of a creator until you’ve worked with them. I’m attracted to artists that have continued to risk, that are good humans despite their greatness, that are committed to artistic excellence, understand the vigor of vision and have a sense of humour." 5. What does a normal day in your life looks like? "When I am at home normal is getting up at 3:00 or 4:00 am. and writing for three to five hours, ideally work out, do business emails and producing to do lists and meetings. When I am in the groove on deadline I get up at 3:00 or 4:00 and write until I can’t write anymore which might take me into the night. As a director, it’s more structured but usually I am up very early doing prep., working out, shooting, then meditation, prep for next day. When I am on the road I try to hang on to the work outs and meditation but most days are full with meetings and industry functions. Normal changes." 6. Where is your favorite place to be and why? "Right now, on my MacGregor, on the ocean. There is a sense of being free and incredibly wealthy at the same time... being in beauty can do that to a person." 7. If you could, what would be the one advice you would want to give to your younger self? "Trust your instincts. Say no as often as you need to." 8. What is one of the best advice that you've got? Who was the person that gave it to you? "Nothing is for free. Even if you accomplish what you want there will be a cost. Make sure you are strong enough to bear it and that it is worth it. My mother." 9. What is your biggest accomplishment so far? "That I am still crazy passionate about the stories I choose to tell and that I am creating up to them." 10. Is there anything you can disclose about your new film, Red Snow? "Red Snow is out there and I am grateful to all the people who had a part in making it happen." 11. What is the best part about life on set? "It’s taken years to get a story to screen and then there you are in the story. There is acceleration and grace with being with the right people at the right time to tell a story. Everything is in the moment." 12. In the end, is there anything you'd like to say to the people who support you? "Thank you. Merci. Mussi Cho. I thank you."
